RECENT EVENTS
Yale in Hollywood - Sundance
Filmmaker panel
PARK CITY, UTAH: We held
our first-ever Yale in
Hollywood Panel and Mixer at
Flanagan's (aka the Guinness House) on Main St. in
Park City, Utah. Attendees included: award-winning Yalie Sundance
filmmakers who spoke on a pre- panel, and
attendees from Fox, CBS, SAG New Media, content creators, indie film
gurus, friends from IVY Entertainment, and more. PICS.
Our panelists discussed how they developed and made their film,
including funding, casting, and marketing. We also discussed the
road to Sundance, how to best meet people at Sundance, and leveraging
Sundance for future filmmaking. Lisa Cortes gave inspiring
closing remarks, saying that the key thing to remember is to make films
with your passion and voice, tell a good story, and effect social
change.
Thanks to our panelists on the Yale in Hollywood - hosted IVY
Entertainment panel, including three Yalies:
- Lisa
Cortes (Yale) executive producer of
Oscar-winning Precious (Sundance 2009) and co-producer of the Woodsman
(Sundance 2004 Grand Jury Prize winner)
- Chip Hourihan (Yale),
producer of Frozen River (Sundance 2009 Grand Jury Winner), and more
than a dozen other films
- Jonathan Zalben (Yale)
music on three of this year's Sundance 2012 films: West of Memphis,
Associate Music Supervisor; California Solo, additional music editor;
The Pact, violin, score consultant
- Ryan Slattery (Harvard), Producer on this year's Playtime
- T. Woody Richmond (Dartmouth), editor on this year's How to Survive a
Plague documentary
Thanks also to party co-hosts IVY Entertainment, Digital LA and
engage:BDR

Also at Sundance:
- Lisa Cortes (Yale) moderated
a panel with Ice-T on Sunday
- James Ponsoldt (Yale), director/writer
of Smashed, tweeted from @SundanceFest. He's good at tweeting from his
@jamesponsoldt Twitter.
________
Yale in
Hollywood - Indie Film Panel
WEST HOLLYWOOD: Yalie indie filmmakers shared their tips and stories on
independent filmmaking, including development, working with celebs,
marketing, the film fest circuit, and distribution. Thanks
speakers for sharing in a very candid and inspirational panel,
organized by Joanne Roboz, Yale in Hollywood Film/TV Chair.
Thanks to our speakers!
- Tammy Hoffs (Pound of Flesh)
- Ted Masur (Best and the Brightest)
- Sarba Das (Karma Calling)
- Chris Angel (This is Not a Test)
- Quentin Lee (People I've Slept With)
- Steven Klein (Make Believe)
Panel highlights by Joanne Roboz:
- Follow your
passions. That’s what will get people psyched to invest in
your movie.
- There are a
million different ways to get a film financed and
distributed. It takes time and patience
- Social
networking is key to getting your film out there. Know
your way around Facebook and Twitter. Integrate them into your
life – make Facebook your home page. Have a blog.
Consultants say to have a project specific twitter handle and Facebook
page. People check Facebook more than they go to a website.
Facebook is key to getting into festivals. Websites cost money to
set up but Facebook is free.
- Financing
sites: United States Artists network – non profit org.
Donations are tax deductible, whereas donations from Kickstarter.com
are not. Indiegogo: if you don’t raise your goal, you don’t
get the money.
- Distribution:
make sure your distributor/sales agent has a plan that you like.
Don’t be afraid to make a change if that plan isn’t working (or doesn’t
exist).
- Not in a Box:
If your film doesn’t fit into a neat box (e.g.
Indian actors in a non-Bollywood story), then you have to be savvy
about your story for marketing purposes.
- Not everything that gets into Sundance gets
distribution. You may have to rent a screening room to try to get
a bunch of distributors to screen your film at once.
- To film
school or not to film school? Opinions were
different: some felt it was an invaluable experience, some felt
you should just start making your movie.
- Celeb
Pros/Cons: Sometimes, having celebs on board is a double-edged
sword. Their
name brand power is great for getting your movie known and having a big
name attached may help get the film financed and distributed.
However,
they have their own reputations to protect so they can get skittish if
they think the film isn’t going to be good for their careers.
