Yale Day(s) of Service
By jgoslin | April 3, 2009
Yalies around the world will unite on Saturday, May 16, 2009 to provide needed services in their communities. The Yale Club of Pittsburgh is partnering with our friends at the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank to offer not one, but three opportunities for Pittsburgh-area alumni to participate in this event.
Interested parties may participate in any combination of events, or one alone. There are no charges associated with any of these days of service, and participants don’t have to be part of the Yale club to volunteer. Please respond to YCOP secretary Sandy Levis.
PRODUCE TO PEOPLE
St. Martin de Porres Social
8th & Market Streets, McKeesport, PA
8:30am. - 12pm, Saturday May 16, 2009
This is a tremendous program in which the YCOP has participated for several years. (Yes, your local Yale Club has led the way on the community-service trend!) Volunteers unload trucks,, set up a distribution line and distribute fresh produce and other essential grocery items to several hundred people in need, then break down the setup. This activity takes place outdoors and requires continuous standing. Families are welcome, but volunteers must be at least 12 years old.
For those seeking greater involvement in this worthy cause, we offer two additional projects:
FOOD BANK OUTREACH TRAINING
Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank Main Office
1 North Linden Street, Duquesne, PA
8:30am - 9:30 am, Thursday May 21, 2009
Volunteers will tour Food Bank headquarters and receive instruction on how to give presentations at schools, churches and other venues concerning hunger, food distribution and associated problems.
SENIOR FOOD BOXES
1 North Linden Street, Duquesne, PA
9:30am — 12pm, Thursday May 21, 2009
Assembly-line production of food packages for senior citizens. This takes place indoors in climate-controlled environment.
