Thursday, May 7, 2009 – Yale Club Annual Dinner with Tom Beckett
6:00 p.m. – Allegheny HYP Club

The club’s oldest and proudest tradition continues with cocktails, a “teacup” auction, and a savory dinner, all washed down with good wine and a healthy dose of Yale pride. This year, we welcome Yale Athletic Director Tom Beckett as our guest speaker.
Beckett, a Pittsburgh native, and a 1968 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, is completing his fourteenth year as Yale’s Athletic Director. Among the many team accomplishments during his tenure are the following:
- the men’s hockey team won its first ECAC Championship
- the men’s basketball team captured its first Ivy title in 40 years
- the volleyball squad became the first Ivy team to win an NCAA Tournament game
- the women’s golf team has won six of the nine league championships
- lightweight crew captured three national titles
- the women’s squash team has won the last three national titles
Mr. Beckett has overseen the renovation, upgrading, and modernization of Yale’s athletic facilities, including the Payne Whitney Gymnasium and the Yale Bowl. Recently, Mr. Beckett led the search that resulted in the hiring of Tom Williams as Yale’s head football coach, the first African-American to hold that position.
So come early for cocktails and bid on a diverse collection of exciting prizes in our “teacup” auction (buy tickets and use as many as you like to bid on your desired prize). All proceeds from the auction benefit our scholarship fund. Last year featured an array of enticing items, from store gift certificates to tickets to local cultural events to the perennial favorite, a Yale-themed miniature dome. This year we are calling on all our alums to help make this our best auction yet. If you can donate items for the auction, or would like to help coordinate the event, please contact Club Secretary Sandra Levis. Even if you can’t join us for the event, a donation to the auction is an easy way to show your support for Yale and its educational mission!
