GRADUATE RESEARCH
FELLOWSHIP
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences plays a key role in
maintaining Yale's standing as a world-class educational institution.
As a result, The Yale Club of Philadelphia established The
Graduate Research Fellowship.
2006 Graduate Research Fellowship Award Recipient: Benjamin M. Looker
This year, the Yale Club of Philadelphia awarded its Graduate Summer Research Fellowship for 2006 to Benjamin M. Looker, a candidate for the Ph.D. in the Department of American Studies.
The title of his dissertation is: “A Place Apart: Imagining the American Neighborhood, 1954-2000.” During the summer of 2006, Mr. Looker will examine the papers of the noted urban critic Lewis Mumford held at the University of Pennsylvania, the papers of former mayor Frank Rizzo held at the Philadelphia City Archives, and the large collection of records on neighborhood organizations held at the Temple University Urban Archives. The materials will provide detailed examples for several historical shifts in the ways in which the language of neighborhood was employed for often-conflicting social and political ends.
Yale Club of Philadelphia Graduate Research Fellowship
The Ph.D. is a research degree. Graduate students come to Yale because the faculty is comprised of world class scholars who are pushing the frontiers of knowledge and publishing in the highest ranked journals. They have the opportunity to learn from collaboration as well as lectures. Students in Yale College benefit from the enthusiasm and knowledge that the faculty derives from research.
The Club decided to limit the award to a student in the Humanities or Social Sciences because there are fewer sources of financial aid in those fields than in the Sciences. By giving preference to a student who has a connection with the Philadelphia area, we continue to honor our city's scholarly heritage.
