George Packer ('82): Writing to Change the World

Packer to Give Harriet Beecher Stowe Lecture at Mercantile Library, June 11, 2009

Since 2003, George Packer has been a staff writer for The New Yorker, where he writes about foreign affairs, American politics, and books. He is the author of The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq, which received several prizes and was named one of the best ten books of 2005 by The New York Times Book Review. He reported from Ohio on the 2008 Presidential election for The New Yorker. Packer graduated from Yale University in 1982 and served in the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa. His work exemplies the theme of the Harriet Beecher Stowe Lecture: writing to change the world.
