Biography of Speaker

Elisabeth Wood is a professor of political science and of international and area studies at Yale University.  Her research focuses on sexual violence during war.  Dr. Wood also examines the emergence and resolution of civil wars, collective action and social movements, transitions to democracy and the politics of Latin America and Africa.  She concentrates on the presence or absence of sexual violence in armed conflicts and analyzes the context in which certain conditions occur.  Dr. Wood studies rebel groups in El Salvador and Sri Lanka, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and armed conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Darfur, among others.

Dr. Wood received two M.A.’s from the University of California, Berkeley and her Ph.D. from Stanford University.  She received the Luebbert Award for the Best Book in Comparative Politics from the American Political Science Association.  Dr. Wood serves on the editorial boards of Politics and Society, American Political Science Review, and the Contentious Politics series of Cambridge University Press.  She was a visiting scholar at the University of Cape Town and at the Institute for Economic and Social Research at Central American University José Simeón Cañas in El Salvador.  Dr. Wood served as a peace scholar at the United States Institute of Peace.
