YAANW Book Group presents: "Why Family and Work Conflict and What to Do About It"
You (and your guests) are invited to come hear Joan Williams ’74 discuss this complex and thorny topic. A discussion, light refreshments and book signing will follow her talk.
Her new book is Unbending Gender: Why Family and Work Conflict and What to Do About It, published in 1999 by Oxford University Press. Publisher's Weekly (11/1/99) gave it a glowing review on Amazon.com. In addition to her B.A. from Yale, Williams has a law degree from Harvard University and a Master's in City Planning from M.I.T.. Currently, she is a Professor of Law, and co-director of the Gender, Work and Family Project at the American University Law School in Washington, D.C..

Theater Studies Professor Murray Biggs on: Misalliance, Shaw, the Guthrie, and Things Dramatic.
See George Bernard Shaw's Misalliance at the Guthrie Theater with Professor Biggs. Nick (’74) and Lori Johnson will host (with appetizers) a reception and lecture, followed by dinner (on your own - try the Guthrie!) and the Play at 7:00 pm. $20 (pay at the reception) gets you a ticket to the play. $5 for just the reception if you are unable to attend the play (it runs 3 hours) or make your own ticket arrangements. Organist Timothy D. Buendorf MM '92, ISM '92 will be in concert with the University of Minnesota Brass Choir (David Baldwin DMA '74, conductor). The program will include Gabrieli's Sonata No. 20 for Five Ensembles (four brass groups, plus organ, in surround-sound), the Poeme Herioque by Marcel Dupre, and other works by Strauss, Bach, Mussorgsky and Widor. Andrea Modica received her BFA from SUNY Purchase and her MFA from Yale. Her preferred camera is the 8 by 10 inch view camera, which she employs to make large format negatives for contact printing in the platinum/palladium process. A past Guggenheim fellow, Modica has been exhibited and collected by institutions throughout North America and Europe. Her monographs include Minor League (1993), Treadwell (1996), and Human Being (2001). She currently lives in Colorado.
Ms. Modica will show prints from several of her projects and share her artistic vision. Copies of her books will be available for sale.

Former Policy Fellow David Hage's new book describes Minnesota's pioneering and much-admired effort to achieve what both liberals and conservatives wanted from welfare reform: To move recipients into the job market while also lifting them out of poverty. The book chronicles Minnesota's 15-year endeavor to design a bipartisan, research-based welfare system that reduces dependency while improving the well-being of poor families. It also tells the stories of three women over the course of a year as they use the Minnesota Family Investment Program to leave welfare.

Harvard/Radcliffe Fellow speaks on modern notions of US childhood
Cindi Katz is a professor of geography in environmental psychology and women's studies at the Graduate Centerof the City University of New York. During her fellowship year at the Radcliffe Institute, Katz is working on a new book project: a critical examination of modern notions of US childhood. Drawing on archival materials and ethnographic research, she addresses the relationship of children to nature, the city, war, and terror and of the way children are understood as workers, consumers, investors, spectacles, and social actors.
