Subject: YALE Club: FOUR events in Feb./March ? Yale-Penn, Dinners with Kawaguchi-sensei, Shades, Dean Salovey

Dear Yalies in Japan,

        After winter hibernation, the Yale Club of Japan will burst forth in February and March with four excellent events:

--- Thursday, February 17 - Yale-Penn Joint Mixer - ?Yale Bar Review? III at SuperDeluxe in Nishi Azabu

--- M
onday, March 7 - Dinner talk and discussion with Yoriko Kawaguchi , the Prime Minister?s foreign affairs advisor
--- Thursday, March 10 - Dinner concert with Shades, Yale?s leading African-American singing group.
--- Wednesday, March 16 - Dinner talk and power point slide show with Peter Salovey, Dean of Yale College.

         Four totally different events! Each with lots of time for drinks, catching up and meishi-swapping. Hope to see you at each one and please, as always, invite or relay this invitation to at least one Yalie who may not be on our 300-name email list.

          Some turnover in our all-volunteer Club:
          Dan Thomas, who has been elected President of the Tokyo American Club, has stepped down as our Treasurer. His successor is John Mirikitani, who signed up on the spot at the well attended Yale-Harvard bar social hour in Roppongi in December.
          Robert Howe, our events chairman, is leaving Tokyo this summer after many years. Engin Yenidunya, our Secretary, has volunteered to take on this second hat. Engin, by the way, has redesigned our website, which is now a great way to keep up: http://www.yaleclubs.org/japan
          A big thanks for Dan and Robert for all their help behind the scenes in executing a series of great events! Robert is working on his finale: a Whiffenpoof concert in June.

          Here are the details of our four events in February and March:

Thursday, February 17 - 7.30pm - Yale-Penn Joint Mixer - Building on the success of the Yale-Harvard event in December, a Yale-Penn evening is scheduled for Feb. 17. This event is a great opportunity to catch up with fellow Yalies in a relaxed atmosphere as well as to meet new friends and make new connections with Penn alumni. No sign-up is necessary - all you have to do is show up! The venue is SuperDeluxe, between Roppongi Hills and Nishi Azabu. Wholesome food is available. Any questions, please e-mail Engin: engin.yenidunya@aya.yale.edu

     Monday, March 7 - 6 p.m. gather for drinks and later dinner with Yoriko Kawaguchi, Yale Masters in Economics ?72. Kawaguchi-sensei has served as Japan?s Minister of Environment, and most recently as Minister of Foreign Affairs. For two years, through last October, Kawaguchi-sensei traveled indefatigably, advocating Japan?s interests in the United States, Europe, Russia, China and the Koreas. Now as Prime Minister Koizumi frames his policies for Japan, he turns to the woman who will speak to Yalies at the Foreign Correpsondents Club of Japan. Kawaguchi-sensei comes to us through the fine efforts of fellow Yalie, Senator Kotaro Tamura, who will be our moderator. Please email acceptance directly to Engin: japanclub@aya.yale.edu

Currently Chris Argyris Professor of Psychology, Dr. Salovey chaired the Department of Psychology from 2000-2003 and was Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Yale University from 2003-2004. <Shades seeks host families>
From March 6th to March 13th, Shades will be in Tokyo. We would be grateful to find volunteer families willing to house and feed one or two group members for the duration of our visit.

We have been extremely entrepreneurial, finding cheap airfare, and affordable venues.  If we could make our tour break even, we could return to Japan regularly.  Free housing makes this a real possibility. Your hospitality makes all the difference!

<Shades for free>
Would anyone be willing to let Shades rehearse in your home and feed the group lunch?  If so, we would gladly share a few songs!

<A night on the town>
Shades members come from throughout the United States.  For many, this will be a first experience abroad.  One of my very best experiences in Japan in the past seven months has been eating.  Over and over, many of you have generously introduced me to fantastic Japanese and international food.

By working extremely hard in America, the group is able to afford 18 tickets to
Tokyo.  But we have very little left over.  If some of you would take one or two Shades members for a Japanese dinner, I know it would be an extremely special experience for them.  Shades LOVES to eat and students could tell you about life on campus over yakitori, sushi, tempura, or noodles.

<Free Fun>
Finally, in my own experience, though
Tokyo is an expensive city, there is plenty of free/cheap fun if one has access to information.  We are looking for opportunities to see music, theater, martial arts, traditional Japanese cultural activities, and art.  The group would love to shop at flea markets.  Please let me know if there is something great happening the second week of March!

Thank You!
