Dear
Yalies,
Welcome back from Summer and an exciting
lineup of fall events for the Yale Club of
Japan.
To catch up after
summer vacations, we start the season off with socializing: a Yale winetasting
and fusion cuisine event on Omotesando on Wed. Sept. 24. Next comes Yoriko
Kawaguchi-san, the Foreign Minister of Japan, addressing us on Oct.1
Finally, Michael Auslin, a Yale history professor, will speak on Oct. 15,
analyzing the Foreign Minister's talk and speaking about how the pieces of the
Northeast puzzle have fit together and have not fit together in past
decades.

Bill and Melanie Campbell started Hotei

Mark Vann and Lisa
Smith brought a similar passion to an old tatami factory in Omotesando. See www.fujimamas.com for information and map.
Fujimama's is two tiny blocks from Meiji Dori along Omotesando Dori, walking
toward route 246 from Harajuku. Turn right after the Lacoste store. 6-3-2

FALL MENU MAIN
COURSE Wed. Oct. 1
Ms
Yoriko Kawaguchi, Foreign Minister of Japan and Yale alumnus, will address Yale
Club members at a dinner Wed. October 1, 2003 at the Foreign Correspondents Club
of Japan. The lead organizer for this event is Mr. Kotaro Tamura, LDP Senator.
Tamura-san and Kawaguchi-san are the chairs of a new committee devoted to
promoting policy debate, the Yale Policy Group. This will be the kickoff event
for the Policy Group. I talked briefly to the Foreign Minister last week, and
she confirmed that she is on!
We have reserved a room
for 85. Please email as soon as possible your acceptances and number of
attendees to the Yale Club email -- "yaleclubjapan@hotmail.com". We have yet to
set a price, but it will be in line with past dinners. No shows will be charged
double. Chigusa Hara is doing the hands on organizing, and would very much
appreciate volunteer assistance: Chigusa.Hara@morganstanley.com.
FALL
MENU DESSERT Tuesday Oct.
14
Michael R. Auslin, Yale's Assistant Professor
of History, a Japan and Northeast Asia specialist, will help us understand the
history behind the challenges Japan faces today in relations with China, Korea
and Russia. Addressing our area, where peace treaties and free trade pacts seem
to be in short supply, Prof. Auslin will talk on:"Searching for Order: The
History and Prospects for Northeast Asian
Security."
The dinner talk will be the FCCJ drinks at
6, dinner at 7 and plenty of time for questions and commentary
afterwards!
Further down
the road, I just extended an open invitation to Ryozo Kato, Japan's Ambassador
to Japan, to address us when he next comes through Tokyo. During his nearly two
years in Washington, Amb. Kato, a Yale Law School graduate, has worked to build
ties between Japan and Yale, visiting New Haven on several
occasions.
See you at the winetasting at Fujimamas
on Wed. Sept. 24!
