Greetings! We have three enticing events coming up for the next six
weeks. Seats are going FAST for the Journalism on Japan event, so if you want to
reserve seats, e-mail us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. If the dining room at the FCCJ
fills up, we will keep a waiting list. We had a good turnout for the
Gus Speth event at the International House -- about 45 were there. Highlighting
the all-volunteer nature of our club, a great group of Forestry and
Environmental Studies graduates helped enormously. Special thanks to: Hironori Kamemoto,
Chie Nakaniwa, Takayuki Hagiwara, Yousuke Abe and Tetsuro
Mori. At our last event, which was in Roppongi, about 20 percent of
reservations were no shows. For the Journalism event at the FCCJ, because demand
is so high, there will zero tolerance on no shows. If we are not contacted at
least a day in advance, we will charge in full. If the club cooks for 60, we pay
for 60. See you at these events!

SPRING BALL Marcy Wilder, vice
president of the Harvard Club, is looking for someone to organize this
spring inter-Ivy Charity Ball. She is
bursting with ideas, and reachable at: <marwil@jircas.affrc.go.jp>
Appended here are details from last year's ball.
Jim: I am
attaching two files which should provide further information about the Ball.
One is the text for the program that was handed out to attendees. It
indicates the location of the event (Westin Tokyo in Ebisu), the names of the
cooperating clubs' presidents, the evening's program, and sponsors of cash
donations and raffle prizes, describes the two targeted charities, and lists
members of the organizing committee. The second file is a generic
announcement that we circulated to all the club representatives for their use
in announcing the Ball to their membership. As you should be able to discern
from the program, the event was presented by the Harvard Club of Japan and
Thierry Porte, in cooperation with over 20 alumni groups of U.S. universities
in Japan. Thus far, the Ball has been held twice, in 2001 and 2002 (organized
by our club). Ideally, in order that it becomes a truly university-wide
event, we feel strongly that participating clubs should rotate in presenting
this event. In this regard, it would be wonderful if your club would be able
to take the reins for the next event. Unfortunately, I do not have any
photographs on hand to send you, but the event itself was attended by 300
people, and was really a lot of fun. If you should have any further
questions, please do not hesitate to let me know. If it is to be held this
coming April, organization really needs to get started right away (it can be
made at a later date, but it has already become sort of a tradition to hold
it in April). In this regard, if you could let me know your thoughts as soon
as possible, I would very much appreciate it. Best regards,
Marcy
