TONTINE REVIEW
On Oct. 27th an intimate group of Yale
alumni
congregated for the Tontine concert on the quiet little cul-de-sac of
Bialik street where the din of Tel Aviv suddenly disappears.
Former Yale Whiff, Orrin Persky's vocal ensemble treated us to a varied
repertoire ranging from Irish to Renaissance music with 3 very
entertaining Beatles pieces in the middle that really got the audience
going. Orrins splendid performance reminded us of the
whiff's superior quality - his solo was a show stopper.
Afterwards members of the ensemble joined alumni an outdoor café where
we commented on how Tontine took us back to Sterling when the whiffs
would sing on Monday nights after Mory's, and back to Yale in general
with the singing groups performing all the time, everywhere. Club
members attending were Alex Rechter '69, Miriam Hartman '80, Aaron
Levin '43, Ari Zalkinder '80, Adam Cole '83, Reena Barnet '98,
Carice Witte '83 and of course Orrin Persky '70.
Next Club Event
Please reserve Thursday, January 13,
2005.
Due to popular demand, the next club event will be a Wine Tasting
evening organized and hosted by our own wine aficionado, Cliff Felig
'80. Invitation to follow.
J-Branch
The club is very pleased to announce
that in early
05 it will launch the Jerusalem Branch of the Yale Club. Deborah
Herzog, branch director can be reached at PreciosaDL@aol.com
Deborah writes:
Were very excited about the
enthusiastic feedback
this idea has received from alumni in Jerusalem. The proximity of
the members of the new Jerusalem branch, affectionately called
J-branch, will allow us to schedule different activities and events
than those of the club in general such as a J-Branch book group.
I look forward to hearing from you with ideas and suggestions.
RAISING YALE AWARENESS of the Yale Club of Israel
Over the summer, we discovered that
many members
of the Yale community traveling to Israel are unaware that there's a
Yale Club here. (not a surprise when there are still Yale alumni in
Israel who don't know we exist) In the process of amending this wholly
unacceptable situation, a small, and very adorable group of club
members worked with Amy Aaland of the Slifka Center. Amy has
arranged that the club website now has links to on the Slifka Center http://www.yale.edu/slifka/ and
Hillel Group websites http://www.yale.edu/hillel/groups.html.
We are also in contact with the Yale Friends of Israel (YFI)
coordinators who keep us posted on undergrads visiting Israel during
the academic year. And because Yale is still the Yale we
remember, Slifka center has now put a Yale Club of Israel poster on in
its notice board. (see attached). Any other suggestions of
ways to reach students or faculty are welcome.
INTERNATIONAL CLUB PROJECT
David Mirchin ES '79 is working on a
bilateral
path to meet the international demand by Yale Clubs around the world
for visits from Yale Club of Israel members. You will soon
receive an invitation to take advantage of the hospitability of Yalies
in such far flung locations as London, San Francisco, Beijing and even
New Haven. Yale Club of Israel members who happen to be traveling
to these and other locations will be invited to meet and speak formally
or informally with the local clubs. Anyone interested, please
contact David at dmirchin@meitar.com
MAGEVET
Yales 10yr old Jewish a cappella
singing group,
Magevet, is interested in performing in Israel. Undeterred by
State Dept. warnings, the only obstacle is financial. Anyone with
suggestions for concerts or financial support sources please contact:
Dan Fichter, Business Manager, Yale's Magevet daniel.fichter@yale.edu
