In 2009, Yale initiated a new world-wide project called
Yale Day of Service. 3,500 members of the Yale community
participated in service activities in 181 sites hosted by 84 clubs
and shared interest groups in 32 states and 12 countries. This
year Israel's Yale Club has taken up the gauntlet and in our
inimitable way, is doing it 'ad ha sof.' We will be the first
international club to have events throughout the country.
Yale Alumni are invited to participate in Service Day
events in the North at Yemin Orde Youth Village in the Carmel, in
the South at Kedma boarding school near Kiryat Gat and in the
Jerusalem area at the Midreshet Beit Shemesh Club house for

component.
JERUSALEM AREA

Whiffenpoofs Israel Tour '08
WHIFFENPOOF A CAPPELLA SINGERS IN CONCERT IN
JERUSALEM
On July 30, 2008, 8:00
pm, the world renowned Yale University Whiffenpoof singers will
present a concert at the Jerusalem YMCA Auditorium. It has been
eight years since the Whiffenpoofs were last in Israel, in the
intervening time, however they have sung for Presidents, including
George H. and George W. Bush and President Bartlett (on the "West
Wing" television series). In addition to demanding annual concert
schedules, where they have sung all over the United States, including
Carnegie Hall, they have appeared on numerous television shows such
as the "Jane Pauley Show", "Jeopardy", and "The Gilmore Girls". The
Jerusalem concert
is a "one performance only" part of their 2008 World Tour, which
this year coincides with the Israel's 60th anniversary.
One can expect a unique evening of entertainment
including innovative A Cappella arrangements of well known popular
songs from different eras, punctuated by the characteristic
playfulness of the tuxedo wearing, white glove clad, all-male Yale
graduates singing in close harmony. The evening promises to include
their trademark song, which features the readily recognizable line,
"We are poor little lambs who have gone astray, baa, baa, baa . .
."
The concert will be held
in benefit of the charities and projects of the Rotary Club of
Jerusalem and the Whiffenpoofs Children's Literacy Initiative.
Tickets are 70 NIS, available

Wine Tasting
Event Summary:
About 25
alumni enjoyed a wonderful evening of wine tasting at the Castel Winery
on January 19th at Ramat Raziel in the Jerusalem Hills. The
owner, Eli Ben-Zaken described the evolution of his small farm
from chickens and horses into one of the most exclusive wineries in
Israel. We enjoyed award-winning wines, home baked bread
and an excellent assortment of fine cheeses. The
event was a great opportunity to talk to old friends and make
new ones. Thanks to the Zalkinder's who organized the evening
and who offered their home afterwards for coffee and cake - a
perfect way to wind-down the evening.

Yale Alumni Host
Divinity School Students
In January, 2006, students from the Divinity
School visited Israel. The Yale Club organized meetings with
Israeli alumni. Following are
comments upon the program
“The divinity school had a program whereby the
students would study a subject for a term and then visit the country
where the subject was based. My colleague, Wes Avram and I renewed the
program this year. We brought 20 of our students from Yale
Divinity School to Israel for 11 days. The trip was the
culmination of a semester of studying the political conflict between
the Israelis and the Palestinians. We met with a wide variety
of speakers (priests, rabbis, political scientists, activists) and
visited Bethlehem, Hebron, Jericho, and various parts of Jerusalem;
we also spent one night at Neve Shalom.
On Friday, January 6th, we attended a service at Kol haNeshama in
Jerusalem, following which we attended erev shabbat dinners in the
houses of Yale alumni. When my students returned to our hotel
later that night, they were bubbling over with stories.
Several students said that the dinner was the most meaningful event
of their 11 days in Israel. The two students who were with
me that evening agreed that if we lived in Jerusalem, we'd
like to have dinner with our hosts every week: it was an
amazing opportunity to learn about life in Israel--and in our case,
to learn about Orthodox Judaism.
We really appreciate the generosity and hospitality of these
families, and we are grateful to Carice for her industry in
organizing the dinners on rather short notice. If anyone is in
New Haven, please look me up, as I'd love to repay the debt in some
small measure.”
- Jeremy
Hultin, Assist. Prof. of New Testament, Yale Divinity
School
“We had a great time with them. My kids asked
after they left if we could have them over again. We would
definitely be open to hosting other Yale guests”.
-Alisa Odenheimer ‘82
“We had a lovely time
hosting the divinity guests. The conversation was theological,
a fascinating opportunity in particular for my Israeli
children.”
-Shira, Yale
Faculty ’80-85 and Ariel Weiss ‘74
“I wanted to thank you for connecting us with
such terrific families. Many of the students felt that the
dinner was the most meaningful moment of their 11 days in
Israel. The two students who were with me agreed that if we
lived in Jerusalem, we'd like to have dinner with the Weiss's every
week”. – Jeremy, Yale
Divinity School
“The two women had a very good time. They
thanked us profusely -- one was from outside Baltimore, my home
town. We didn't talk politics, although they gathered
what our politics were. Frankly, while they seemed very
interested, they seemed also a bit clueless, as well they should be,
since they have not a lot of background knowledge. So they were very
respectful and not judgmental. and were very thoughtful. They
were taken to mostly leftwing activist places, although they were
also taken to the Christian Embassy, which is very rightwing. So in
short, while the trip was not particularly balanced (they are div
students, after all, so one expects a liberal slant), it wasn't
entirely one-sided.” - Chip Manekin
“During dinner, we had a pleasant conversation

always had students for Shabbat. They were very pleased to eat real
food.”

their trip was a visit to Israel (o.k., The Holy Land ) , at
best their exposure was less than minimal.
If it was a seminar on the Arab-Israeli

We shared a
lovely Shabbat dinner with Abbey and Elizabeth - but it seems that
their trip was planned with a clear "agenda", and not in the
itinerary sense.
Have you received similar feedback ? If
so I feel that such feedback should make its way back to New Haven,
and not solely to Prof. Agenda.
Thanks so much for your
important initiative.

“We enjoyed them very much and would be glad to
host them in the future. Barbara & I did not feel that they had any
very left positioning, though they may have been prompted to stay
clear of politics. Wesley (?) the prof mentioned to Barbara that at
times it was hard for Arabs to get to Hadassah hospital due to
check points. B replied that acts have results. Israel isn't happy
to have to dump million of $ into a separation fence but restricting
flow means restricting terrorist access.”

“The experience was - as always with Yale
people - very positive for all concerned. We're glad we had the
opportunity to meet these students directly and expose them to
Israeli life.
It was clear they had been exposed to
Palestinians and their message. The students were very nice,
inquisitive and intelligent and our whole family enjoyed having
them.
I feel that this is an important aspect of what
the club is all about” All the -Orrin Persky ‘70
It is also important to note that through this
club activity, Yale Hillel’s Slifka Center learned of the divinity
school student’s visit, contacted the Div school and proposed
working with them on a program to follow up to their Israel
visit.

and
Private Tour of the Castel Winery
Thursday, January 19, 2006
Wine tasting and
private tour of the Castel Winery was hosted by the owner,
Eli
Ben-Zaken. The evening was arranged by Ari
Zalkinder. All in attendence enjoyed the award-winning
wines along with fascinating explanations of how the winery's blends
are made. The wines have received accolades from reviewers
worldwide, making them some of the finest Israeli wines
available. Veteran club members, as well as several new-comers
also enjoyed fine cheeses and home-baked breads. The event was
a great opportunity to talk to old friends and make new ones.
Coffee and cake at the Zalkinder's was a perfect way to wind-down
the evening.

Yale Club of Israel
June 29, 2004
Dear Friends,
On June 29th
alumni from Yale and Harvard along with a few Yale undergrads
interning in Israel this summer had the opportunity to spend an
evening with students and faculty of the Netivot pilot program
created and designed to launch a “sophisticated new educational
model to satisfy the deep desire of young people to connect
intellectually and emotionally with Israel. This summer's
curriculum, entitled "Connection and Conflict" considered the
competing narratives and ideologies that describe and assert the
connection to the land of Israel / Palestine by Jews and by
Palestinian Arabs. It explored what is entailed in living and even
thriving while caught in the vise of a highly complex
political-cultural-religious-military conflict. It searched for
realistic bases on which to ground a hopeful vision of future
reconciliation. Among the guest teachers were: David Hartman, Moshe
Halbertal, Yossi Klein Halevi, and Michael Oren.
After
introductions from the Yale Club President, Aaron Levin, Harvard
Club Co-president, Professor Malka Schaps, Dr. Bernard Steinberg,
Director of Harvard Hillel, and Yale Jewish Chaplin, Rabbi Jim
Ponet, Director of Yale’s Slifka Center, we heard from undergrads
representing each of the participating universities- NYU, Yale,
Harvard and Bar Ilan. For many, it was their first time visiting
Israel. All agreed that the 18 days were intense with sensory
overload both from the ‘confusing’ array of information about life
and politics in Israel as well as the wide range of views and
opinions of their fellow travelers. All agreed that it was a
thoroughly enriching and eye-opening experience. It was also clear
to the undgrads and faculty alike that it would take some time and
effort to synthesize and absorb all that the students had seen and
heard during the intensive two and half week period.
Following the
presentations, undergrads and alumni enjoyed refreshments in the
Beit Shmuel Garden courtyard. Undergrads were interested to hear
about life for Yalies in Israel. Alumni had the opportunity to meet
the staff including, Rabbi Lina Frazier-Zerbarini, Rabbi Ponet’s
assistant at the Slifka Center who was instrumental in helping to
organize the Yale student end of the project. We also found out more
about the Netivot experience as well as current campus life and
caught up in general with friends and acquaintances. A number of
alumni were very pleased to see Rabbi Jim Ponet back in Israel.
