Celebrating Yale Women: The Chicago Event--Thursday, February 18, 2010

This academic year marks 40 years since the brave female souls--then known as "girls"---of the classes of '71, '72 and '73 entered the sacred gates of Yale College, and 140 years of women at the University. Come listen to anecdotes from these pioneers and share of few of your own! And bear in mind the immortal words of the then Dean of Admissions, Inslee ("Inky") Clark, as he commented in the January 2, 1969, Wall Street Journal article on the challenges that would face Yale's new entrants: "Everyone knows that women prefer to take baths rather than showers, but in all of Yale College, there is only one bathtub." The presentations will be short, with ample time to meet and mingle with your fellow Yalies!

Event takes place on Thursday evening, February 18, from 5:30 to 9:00 pm at the Women's Athletic Club, 626 North Michigan Avenue (entrance on Ontario). Wine, beer, soft drinks and heavy appetizers will be served. Cost is $45 each for Yale Club members & guests, $35 each for recent graduate members (college/grad school classes of 2004-2009), or $55 each for nonmembers and all walk-ins paying at door. A $100 Patron donation will help underwrite the event as well as recent graduate attendees. Ticket price includes one drink and hors d'oeuvres; additional drinks available at a cash bar. Please mail in your check or credit card information with the reservation form by February 8. For late reservations, call the Club office at 847-256-5800.

This event is presented in collaboration with the AYA (Association of Yale Alumni). A three-day conference "Celebrating Yale Women" will also take place in New Haven on March 26-28, 2010 (women.alumni.yale.edu). Attend the Chicago event in February and head to New Haven in March!

Yale Club Family Event at Garfield Park--Sunday February 21, 2010

Are you & your kids feeling cooped up and ready for a vacation to a tropical jungle? Please join us for our next Yale Club of Chicago family event at the Garfield Park Conservatory Children's Garden, Sunday February 21 from 10:00 am to noon. The Garfield Park Conservatory is located at 300 N. Central Park, just a 10-minute drive from the Loop with free parking. The Green Line goes directly to its doorstep.

Never been to the Garfield Park Conservatory? You are in for a treat! A hidden gem right here in Chicago, the conservatory is one of the largest gardens under glass in the nation, with a fascinating 100-year history. It offers acres of plants including banana and papaya trees, winding paths to explore, a fish pond, warm moist tropical air (peel off those sweaters!), and a children's garden with a big slide, dig pit, and area for crawlers. There is something to discover for people of all ages www.garfieldconservatory.org.

Join us in the children's garden at 10 am and participate in the family fun programming at 11 am, in which you can dig in the pit, plant a tropical garden, or complete the Sugar from the Sun scavenger hunt. At 11:30, meet up in the indoor picnic area to enjoy a snack from home or you can purchase something from the snack cart. Look for host Stephanie Rath with her two boys (ages 1.5 and 3.5). This event is free, although donations to the conservatory are appreciated. RSVP to Stephanie Rath at stephanie_rath@yahoo.com.
