About the guest speaker: Mr Jiang is Director of Special Curriculum of the Shenzhen High School.  Shenzhen High School is among the best public high school in southern China.  Each year, the school sends more students to the prestigious Tsinghua and Peking Universities than any other schools in the region.   The school currently has alumni matriculating at Princeton, Columbia , Chicago, and other top American schools.  More importantly, the school is leading a movement towards Chinese education reform.

As one of China's leading educators, Mr Wang Zheng, Principal of the school, has implemented various reforms at Shenzhen High School over the past eight years, and has recently become principal of Peking University High School in Beijing. The Special Curriculum program, implemented last year, is one of the many recent educational initiatives instituted by Principal Wang.

The Special Curriculum employs nine foreign teachers, all graduates of some of the most prestigious universities.   In the United States, these teachers led reading programs and reading-intensive, college-style seminars to help prepare students for success at American institutions.  Seminar topics cover a variety of disciplines such as psychology, economics and globalization, history, sociology and literature. Additionally, the school has implemented a number of rigorous extracurricular programs such as a daily newspaper, a monthly English magazine, and a student-run, for-profit coffee house.  The school has just opened a 4,000 volume English library and instituted a health and fitness program, complete with a new cafeteria specializing in healthy, well-balanced meals.  All of our seminars, activities, and special programs are designed to foster free thinking, independence, and intellectual curiosity among our students.  The school is planning to expand aspects of the Special Curriculum to Peking University High School as early as next year.
