Hong Kong and Yale are nearly half a world apart, but the Yale Club of Hong Kong strives to bring them closer together.

Origins

The Yale Club of Hong Kong was born in early 1981 when Dr. Po-Wen Huang (Yale College '60, Yale Graduate School '61, '63) invited all known Yale alumni in Hong Kong to get together for a lunch in Central - and about 15 people responded. From this modest beginning has grown the most active Yale Club outside the United States. At present there are over 300 members, including about 220 alumni, 50 students, 40 parents, and several Yale faculty members doing research here. Alumni of all 12 of Yale's schools are represented.

Mission

The Club exists to connect members of the Yale family in Hong Kong with each other and with the University, and to help facilitate Yale's engagement with Hong Kong and greater China.

Membership

Unlike many alumni associations, the Yale Club of Hong Kong is deliberately informal in structure. No official application is required to join: if you're a Yale graduate, student or parent in Hong Kong, you're automatically considered a member. All you have to do is get in touch - click here.

Activities

There are usually one or two events per month, such as lunches, guest speakers, seminars with visiting Yale professors, hikes, boat trips, group tickets when musicians from Yale perform, and so forth. Activities are coordinated by the Club's officers, who hold a planning supper once a month.

The Club also supports many ongoing efforts, including:

  • interviews with prospective students;
  • presenting the Yale Book Award to outstanding students in local high schools; sponsoring a current Yale student as an AYA Community Service Fellow each summer to work with the homeless in Hong Kong;
  • participating in local U.S. education fairs; and
  • helping to fund the annual student exchange program between Yale and New Asia College at Chinese University, among others.

A newsletter is sent out to all members several times per month as needed. Members can choose to receive it by either fax or e-mail.

Dues

The Yale Club does no fund-raising, so annual dues are its primary way of financing activities. The suggested amount for dues is HK$450 per year, HK$200 for student members. Or, you may elect for Lifetime Membership at $5000. There's also a "Bulldog Club" level of membership, at HK$900 per year. Bulldog members enjoy reciprocal rights with the Yale Club in Heaven, although the requisite visas remain the individual member's responsibility.

If you have not paid dues for this year, you may post your cheque to "The Yale Club of Hong Kong " , GPO Box 10246 , Hong Kong . Or you can transfer the funds electronically or by phone-banking.  If you choose to do an electronic or phone-banking transfer, or direct check or cash deposit, please send our Treasurer Renu an e-mail (petersohn@netvigator.com) so that we can provide you with payment information and update our records. Feel free to call her with any questions at 2849 6456.
