Applicant Interviews

One of the functions of the Alumni Schools Committee (ASC) for the Southern California area is to interview prospective students and submit interview reports to Yale's admission's office for consideration as part of the student's application.

Another function is to provide a local resource for prospective students who would like to speak to alumni about Yale, as opposed to reading about it only. The ASC also recruits students who have received offers of admissions.

For more information, or to participate in the interviewing and recruiting process -- contact Don Nakanishi at 323-222-2543 or dtn@ucla.edu.

Interviews for Early Decision Applicants are due by December 1st, so interviewers for these candidates are needed from late October. Regular applicant interviews are due by March 1st, so interviewers are needed all through the winter.

By March, the admissions office has selected the admittees. As of April, they've been informed, and the ASC starts the process of contacting them to encourage them to choose Yale. The deadline for student acceptance is May 1. The ASC learns the final statistics of admission in copious detail within a few weeks. A summary is sent via email to our interviewers and to the Yale Club board. Two parties, for admittees and matriculants in Southern California (in the spring and summer respectively), are held at local alumni's private homes.

More information concerning the process can also be found on the Yale University Alumni Schools Committee.

Yale Book Award

Beginning in early spring, the Yale Book Award goes to public and private school juniors who have demonstrated "outstanding personal character and intellectual promise." More than a 100 books are distributed. The books are funded by contributions to the Yale Book Award from local alumni. We welcome your interest in participating in this part of our recruiting activity.

For more information, contact Stephen Bache at 818-956-8190 or BacheCapitalMgmt@aol.com.

As you can see from the above schedule, it is a busy schedule almost throughout the entire year. We hope that you will be a participant in at least some of these activities. If you have ideas or suggestions about improving the ASC program, please let us know.

Book Award does recruit students!

To:Mr. Stephen Bache
Southern California Yale Alumni Association

Dear Mr. Bache:

Thank you and the committee for selecting the book Irrational Exuberance presented to the 2003 Yale Book Award Recipients. Recently I received the book as an award from <school name withheld> for Outstanding Personal Character and Intellectual Promise. I want to express my sincere appreciation to the Southern California Yale Alumni Association for continuing to participate in this community service program for local high schools.

The admission brochure and the pamphlet included with the book have been especially useful in providing information about Yale's strong commitment to diversity. The presence on campus of students from more than 70 countries and all 50 states, and the fact that 30 percent of Yale students are people of color make Yale a very attractive option for me. Because of my diverse ethnic background and my desire to continue to live and study in a community that fosters cultural diversity and international understanding, I will apply to Yale for undergraduate admission.

The Southern California Alumni Association's efforts to create a Yale presence in the community through the book awards program have been successful in my high school. I have shared the brochures with classmates and this has heightened their interest in applying to Yale. The book will be added to my summer reading list and will be an excellent reference for my upcoming AP Geography class as we study stock market trends and the workings of our national economy.

Sincerely,

T. S. <student's name withheld>
