Alums share TV writing tips, secrets
February 9, 2006

HOLLYWOOD HILLS - Yalie TV writers shared industry tips in a Yale in Hollywood panel that included everything from "networks vs. cable" to  "comedy, dramas and sci-fi." to "get a good agent."

Thanks to our excellent panelists for sharing their insights:

- Tony  Phelan (writer/producer of Grey's Anatomy)
- Michael  Taylor (Star Trek Voyager, Dead Zone, Battlestar Galactica)
- April  Pesa (Scrubs, I'm With Her)

Our discussion also covered TV trends, such as the cyclical resurgence of high quality dramas, the forecast for sit-coms, the lingo of the biz, and the impact of TiVo and video ipods.  One key to writing is making sure you can write in the "voice" of the show.

In 2006, Grey's Anatomy wins the WGA award for best new series, and was nominated for Golden Globes, Emmys and DGA awards)

The comedy Scrubs has a clear "voice"

Battlestar Galactica reaches out to its techy fans.  Episodes are available for download to iPod video, and you can sign up for text alerts on the web site.
