Reality TV alums get real with scoop on reality TV
October 10, 2006

HOLLYWOOD HILLS - Our panel of Yalies in reality TV described the workings of reality TV - from concept to field work getting thousands of hours of footage, to editing that down to a compelling story.

Yes, reality TV is part of every network's fall lineup thanks to the continued success of Survivor, Amazing Race, and other reality TV shows.  And Yalies rock as contestants:   Yalie Chip Arndt won Amazing Race 4, and Yale Law School grad Yul Kwon is the most popular Survivor on the current Survivor: Cook Islands.

At our panel with Yale alums who've worked in reality TV, we discussed  how reality TV shows are created, developed, and pitched,  what casting agents look for, and how shows are edited.

Thanks to our alums for sharing their insights and experience with us:

Lowell Goodman - supervising story producer on E!'s The Entertainer with Wayne Newton,  story editor/producer on Trading Spouses, What's With That House, and segment producer of the Miss American pageant.  His other credits include Into the Firestorm, Small Medium at Large, and Dance Fever

Don London - story editor, producer on Kill Reality, What's With That House, King of Vegas

Tania Krebs - Entertainment lawyer, and contestant on Blind Date.  Yes this means that in the clip Tania showed us of her Blind Date episode, that the Blind Date bubbles above her head said things like "Jury's out on this guy" and "case dismissed!"

Charles Wachter, producer Fit Kids with Shaquille O'Neill, story editor/producer on The One: Making a Musical Star, Kill Reality. Also worked on Supergroup and the Bachelor II, Casting Special.

Scott Gamzon  - editor on Apprentice, Apprentice 2, 3, and - Martha Stewart, The Simple Life.  Scott said that yes, the footage of Omarosa getting hit on the head with plaster and playing ball with the kids in the street was actually shot on the same day, despite her claims otherwise.
