Brian Nelson gives tips to writers
July 19, 2006

HOLLYWOOD HILLS - Yalie Brian Nelson described his writing path to Hollywood, from writing on JAG and Lois and Clark: The Adventures of Superman, to the movie Hard Candy, which won accolades at Sundance.

Describing his career path, Brian said as a writer, he's realized you can't predict what will happen with a script.  Several times, scripts he's written for a certain TV show or movie got him the job for a completely different show/movie.

He also said that writers should develop a "knack" or be known for certain type of writing, which would make them better than other candidates for a certain project.  He said he likes to write character-driven plots where characters are put in new surroundings and pushed to their limits to see how far they will go - which defines who they are.

His current project is 30 Days of Night, a vampire thriller starring Josh Hartnett.  The film is an adaptation of a graphic novel in which the vampires get smart, and raid the small town Barrow Alaska where in the winter, the sun doesn't shine for a month.

Brian also appeared on a panel at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego.  His panel, Adapting Comics to Film, also featured X-Men 3 co-writer Simon Kinberg.
