Panel: Copyright in the Digital Age

DOWNTOWN - In this timely panel, our esteemed panelists discussed copyright law, Grokster, Eldred, and the courts' role in strengthening copyright protections. Panelists included:

  • F. Jay Dougherty. (Moderator). Professor of Law, Loyola Law School.  Prof. Dougherty teaches copyright and entertainment industry-related courses. He has worked for Arista Records, and in his legal practice and in-house work has represented Broadway composers, music publishers, recording artists and record labels, as well as handling music business affairs for a major studio and an independent film production company. He is also a songwriter and performing guitarist.
  • Michael Adler is a senior litigation associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and a member of the Media and Entertainment Practice Group. Adler focuses on counseling and litigation for entertainment and intellectual property, including clients such as USC, video game manufacturers and major motion picture studios.
  • Melinda Demsky, VP, Fox, discussed the Grokster case.
  • Kevin Jerome (K. J.) Greene. Associate Professor, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego. He has represented clients such as Time-Warner/HBO, Spike Lee's film production company, pop singer Bobby Brown, Geraldo Rivera, and the rap group Public Enemy. He has taught at Thomas Jefferson since 1997. He was named one of the top 10 IP attorneys in San Diego.
  • Wesley Hsu. Deputy Chief, Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes Section, Office of the United States Attorney, Central District of California. Graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School. Mr. Hsu also teaches Trial Advocacy as an Adjunct Professor at Loyola Law School.
  • Kelly Klaus. Litigation Partner, Munger, Tolles & Olson. Mr. Klaus's practice consists of complex business litigation, including intellectual property, appellate practice, and employment law. Representative clients include high-technology companies and telecommunications providers. Graduate of UCLA and Stanford Law School.
  • Lee Weinberg. Transactional Partner, Alschuler Grossman Stein & Kahan LLP. Mr. Weinberg has advised clients in more than $20 billion in domestic and international transactions and financings, and concentrates in corporate and growth finance, mergers and acquisitions, and business matters involving technology, media, communications, and intellectual property.  Graduate of the University of Rochester and Yale Law School.
