Yale in Hollywood Chat:
"Winnie the Pooh Around the World"

Global licensing and marketing"
Hollywood Hills

Alums discussed Winnie the Pooh global licensing and  marketing strategy with Yalie Preston Lewis.  Lewis is Director of Global Franchise Management at Disney Consumer Products where he handles Winnie the Pooh. Pooh is the largest character franchise in the world for Disney Consumer Products, with strong appeal in all the major world markets -- U.S., Japan, Europe, and Asia Pacific. In this evening Master's Tea style chat, we discussed consumer products, licensing, and global marketing.

Some tidbits:

  • Winnie the Pooh is popular around the world.  Pooh products alone, from toys to books, makes up a third of Disney's licensed product revenue.
  • Women like Pooh and Eeyore.  Eeyore is popular in England and in the U.S. especially among women who like his "let's get thru life" attitude
  • Guys tend to like the bouncey one, Tigger.
  • Pooh is getting ready for his big 80th Birthday in 2006
  • Winnie is named after Winnipeg, Canada

We concluded with a Pooh trivia contest.  Attendees answering correctly won prizes including: Winnie the Pooh key chain, DVD, book, lollipop, and of course, plush toy.

Thanks to Preston Lewis for sharing his wisdom and bringing great gifts!
