"Trends in the Music Business:
What's Hot and What's Not" |

DOWNTOWN - An all-Yalie panel of music industry experts discussed
hot trends in the music industry. The panel covered trends from
iTunes' revenue models to mash-up concerts to music downloading
forcing studios to generating revenue from licensing artists via films
and TV, and even opening up clubs and cologne lines with the artists'
names.
Our panel of Yale alums discussed the important challenges and opportunities facing the music business. Speakers:
- Joel Flatow. General Manager, West Coast
Operations, Recording Industry Association of America. Celebrating
his 10th year at RIAA, Flatow leads RIAA's west coast
operations, whose companies create, manufacture, and distribute 90%
of US sound recordings. He also serves as Senior VP of Artist &
Industry Relations. He is a former Yale Whiffenpoof and a graduate
of Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music Pre-Colleges and
performed for 10 seasons as a member of the Washington Opera at the
Kennedy Center.
- Jud Friedman. Hit songwriter and producer.
Mr. Friedman has been nominated for numerous Oscars, Grammys and
Golden Globes for songs including: "Run to You" for Whitney Houston
(The Bodyguard), "I don't have the Heart" for James Ingram
(#1 on Billboard's "Hot 100" pop songs) and "For the First Time" for
Kenny Loggins (One Fine Day).
- Aaron Harrison. Music Attorney, Manatt,
Phelps & Phillips, LLP. Mr. Harrison's practice focuses primarily on
talent representation and advising companies in the acquisition of
intellectual property and promotional rights.
- Tanya Grieg. Business Affairs attorney,
Interscope Geffen A&M Records.
- Joe Smith. Former Chairman, Capitol/EMI;
former Chairman Elektra; former President Warner Bros. Records.
- F. Jay Dougherty (moderator). Professor of
Law, Loyola Law School. Prof. Dougherty teaches copyright and
entertainment industry-related courses. He has worked for Arista
Records, and in his legal practice and in-house work has represented
Broadway composers, music publishers, recording artists and record
labels, as well as handling music business affairs for a major
studio and an independent film production company. He is also a
songwriter and performing guitarist.
