Yale in Hollywood- Music Panel

"Trends in the Music Business:
What's Hot and What's Not"

DOWNTOWN - An all-Yalie panel of music industry experts discussed hot trends in the music industry.  The panel covered trends from iTunes' revenue models to mash-up concerts to music downloading forcing studios to generating revenue from licensing artists via films and TV, and even opening up clubs and cologne lines with the artists' names.

Our panel of Yale alums discussed the important challenges and opportunities facing the music business. Speakers:

  • Joel Flatow. General Manager, West Coast Operations, Recording Industry Association of America. Celebrating his 10th year at RIAA,  Flatow leads RIAA's west coast operations, whose companies create, manufacture, and distribute 90% of US sound recordings. He also serves as Senior VP of Artist & Industry Relations. He is a former Yale Whiffenpoof and a graduate of Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music Pre-Colleges and performed for 10 seasons as a member of the Washington Opera at the Kennedy Center.
  • Jud Friedman. Hit songwriter and producer. Mr. Friedman has been nominated for numerous Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes for songs including: "Run to You" for Whitney Houston (The Bodyguard), "I don't have the Heart" for James Ingram (#1 on Billboard's "Hot 100" pop songs) and "For the First Time" for Kenny Loggins (One Fine Day).
  • Aaron Harrison. Music Attorney, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP. Mr. Harrison's practice focuses primarily on talent representation and advising companies in the acquisition of intellectual property and promotional rights.
  • Tanya Grieg. Business Affairs attorney, Interscope Geffen A&M Records.
  • Joe Smith. Former Chairman, Capitol/EMI; former Chairman Elektra; former President Warner Bros. Records.
  • F. Jay Dougherty (moderator). Professor of Law, Loyola Law School. Prof. Dougherty teaches copyright and entertainment industry-related courses. He has worked for Arista Records, and in his legal practice and in-house work has represented Broadway composers, music publishers, recording artists and record labels, as well as handling music business affairs for a major studio and an independent film production company. He is also a songwriter and performing guitarist.

Thanks to our panelists and moderator, and to Ophir Finkelthal for organizing and the Loyola Law School for hosting.
