YCSC Santa Anita Seabiscuit Tour

Alums enjoy Seabiscuit Tour, Day at the Races at Santa Anita Racetrack
1 November 2003

ARCADIA - A group of 30 alums and friends enjoyed a fun behind the scenes tour of the stable film sets used in this summer's movie Seabiscuit, at the Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia. We teamed up with alums from the Penn Club of SoCal to tour the Seabiscuit sets and enjoy a day at the horse racetrack.

Our group saw the stables for the several horses that played Seabiscuit (some were actor horses, some were stunt horses!).

A walking machine used to allow the horses to walk themselves. Saves the trainers some time!

Eleanor, our tour guide, then gave us a walking tour of the park-like racetrack grounds, complete with fountains and statues of Seabiscuit.

After the tour, we enjoyed a barbeque buffet lunch in the in-field. Yalie Dan Cheuh, who owns several race horses, gave us quick tips in betting, pointing out the differences between a trifecta and exacta, and the usefulness of the numbers in the horse stat book. Dan actually had a horse that was supposed to run in the day's race, but it was pulled from the line-up at the last minute due to throat surgery. Also, Dan contributed a hat, from his friend who helped with the Seabiscuit props, as a door prize!

Toward the end of the afternoon, we drew door prizes for the hat and two Seabiscuit T-shirts, donated by Yalie Maggie Malone, a director of development from the Universal Studios production company for Seabiscuit.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped out with the event, including:
 - Dan Cheuh, for the lessons in betting basics and the hat
 - Maggie Malone, for the two Seabiscuit T-shirts
 - Melissa Wu, President of the Penn Club, for coordinating her Penn folks
 - All of our attendees, friends, and family for coming!

The life-size Seabiscuit statue shows that Seabiscuit was much smaller than a standard racing horse - a true underdog!

Yalie/horse owner Dan Cheuh gives Martin some tips on using the stats book to try to pick a winning horse.

Congratulations to Prize Winners!

Keith wins a Seabiscuit shirt (that's his own stuffed horse)

Gary wins a hat - and his daughters made more than $70 by picking the longshot horse because they liked the name!

Hani wins a T-shirt
