| by Jack Adams, BA '41 Smylnjac@aol.com While Yale has been one of the great experiences of my life, recently I have found more and more reasons that make it difficult for me to urge our grandchildren to seek admission there. It is with considerable irony then that I must add that I would not be disappointed to find six or eight years from now that we had one - or even several - grandchildren who graduated from Yale. In examining this thought on a coldly objective basis, I believe the education offered by Yale is still as fine as one could find anywhere. However, I am convinced that undergraduate life now differs significantly from that which we enjoyed. I will say that I am pleased if not delighted while talking with Yale undergraduates or recent grads from time to time, to find virtual unanimity in their feeling that they had died and gone to heaven while at Yale |

| I believe that the values, ethical and political orientation as well as the social and cultural tastes that it helped us shape are different, sometimes quite significantly, from those of today. How much influences such as these mean to a person and how much they are apt to impact on ones personal development are, of course, quite subjective and vary widely. Fortunately, as we age, we often find that characteristics that earlier we considered dangerous or inappropriate have disappeared or have become less threatening. With the strength of Yales academic foundation together with her sound and abiding traditions, there is much promise that the aberrations that seemed bothersome will work themselves out. As I write on the eve of The Game (In Cambridge this year) after Yales defeating Princeton last week, let us hope that Yale will become 1998 Champions of the Big Three and have a winning record with the Ivy League for the first time in years! |

| Editor's Note: Harvard's 3-game winning streak over Yale came to an end this year, as Yale defeated the Crimson, 9 - 7. With 9:33 left in the game, Yale was trailing, 7 - 0, but came back for the win. | |||||||||
