| by Michael Lejeune, '40 Chairman, Alumni Schools Committee LejeuneML@aol.com One of the principal activities of our club is to interview all students applying to Yale from schools in our area. This area includes Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties; Ventura; and the Ojai Valley. Interviews are conducted by members of our Alumni Schools Committee, as it is at other Yale clubs throughout the country and abroad. |

| Current members who have conducted interviews, in addition to myself, are: in Santa Barbara, Patricia Hall; Palmer Jackson, Jr.; John Lincoln; Kevin Looper; Barbara Masin; Rick Ryu; Tim Schiffer; Philip Walker; Geofrey Wyatt; and Burke Zen. Beyond the immediate Santa Barbara area, our interviewers include: Doug Chisolm in Atascadero; Charles Jackson in Solvang; Don Leavenworth in Santa Ynez; Phil Moncharsh in Ojai; Bob Rabkin in Ventura; Art Segal in San Luis Obispo; and Jim Stotter in Cambria. This year the total number of applicants to Yale was just over 12,000. Offers of admission went to 2,144 (17%) and 1,318 accepted, giving a yield of 61%, the same as last year, and up from 55% in 1994-95. The Class of 2001 enrolling this fall has been purposefully kept smaller than the class of 2000 which, at 1,438, was over-enrolled. There were 26 applicants to Yale from our arealess than the 28 of last year, but the same as 26 the year before. Three were accepted. One of those chose to go to Harvard. The two going to New Haven this fall are Mary Mackenzie Duncan and Noel Kimiko Sugimura. Mary lives in Santa Ynez and graduated from Santa Ynez High School. She was interviewed by Don Leavenworth. Noel lives in Ojai and went to the Cate School. Jack Adams interviewed her. Jack and Don, both experienced educators, gave these candidates the highest possible rating, described in the interview report form as Truly extraordinary candidate, the one in a hundred even in Yale competition. We are lucky to have such outstanding new Yale students. Any one with a degree from Yale who would be interested in interviewing applicants to Yale should call me at 805-963-6598. |
