Charlie Bryant (1952-2010)
On Wednesday afternoon, December 1, 2010, after a long battle with liver disease, Charlie Bryant
(Charles A. Bryant, Yale BA '74) passed away at UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital in Los Angeles.
Charlie was 58 years old.
While at Yale, Charlie proved himself to be a remarkable combination of selfless friend to many,
brilliant mathematician, and competitive athlete (coxing Yale's varsity eight for most of his four years at Yale).
Twice married (and twice divorced) after his Yale years, Charlie achieved much during three distinct careers
as an actuary, then an attorney, and finally as an LA-area teacher. He is survived by his brother Randy,
a Houston attorney; and by his significant other, Susan Rosenwasser of Santa Monica, in whose arms he died.
Despite his later years on the West Coast, Chas (as many of us called him) remained proud of his New Orleans roots
(and friends there); and fiercely proud of Yale and of being a Yalie through-and-through. Susan reports he was wearing his Yale cap when he died.
Those who knew him best, knew him as a gentle soul;
and as a gifted thinker with a streak of curiosity and passion for the world around him.
Though Chas fought hard and gracefully for life in his final weeks,
his early death is a tragedy, and he will be greatly missed. For more information,
please feel free to contact Charlie's lifelong friend, classmate and Yale roommate, Steve Blum at sblum@bsibam.com.

Classmate Appearances & Publications

Julia K. Murray (JE) reports the opening of her exhibition
"CONFUCIUS: His Life and Legacy in Art," at the China Institute Gallery in New York on Feb. 11
(on view until June 13, 2010). Co-curated with the director of the Shandong Provincial Museum in China,
the show brings treasured objects from Confucius's hometown of Qufu, Shandong, some of which are being
shown outside China for the first time. Accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, the exhibition
is the first ever to examine the material and visual culture of the state and family cults for
worshiping Confucius (who lived from 551-478 BCE). Particularly relevant as China promotes
Confucius as a national symbol, the show explores the many ways that Confucius has been
used over the centuries and includes varied images of him. Murray, a professor at the University of Wisconsin, notes that she
found the Yale Club of New York a congenial place to stay, with a wonderful library, when she came to work on the exhibition.
