A Class of 1957 visit to Lincoln-Bassett School - 3/2/04

A snow storm may have delayed our visit to Lincoln-Bassett, but it certainly did not dampen the enthusiasm of the children there. We were made to feel most welcome and their gratitude for our support seemed real and heartfelt. A brief summary of the project can be downloaded here.

The day started with brief presentations on the use of music to enhance grammar school education by the principal, Ramona Gatison, the New Haven Schools Music Supervisor, Regina Warner, and several of the students reading their thank you letters. All of those letters are available in two files:
Our first visits of the day were to several classrooms where music and rhythm were used to aid the students understanding and memory of critical facts. It certainly got all the kids involved.

The next visits were to keyboarding room with equipments purchased through the funds provided by the Class. To see first graders knowing note values and letter names was as impressive as their use of the keyboards.

Our delicious luncheon featured brief talks by Dr. Warner, Director of curriculum for New Haven Schools, Dr. Paul Hawkshaw, of the Yale Music School, a prime mover of this project, and the class's prime mover, Don Roberts.

The afternoon concert featured groups from Headstart, Lincoln-Bassett keyboard and vocal groups, plus visiting choruses from Nathan Hale School and the Arts and Humanities High School. Last month, the choruses of these three New Haven Schools combined to do a tribute to Martin Luther Spring with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. They repeated one of their selections from this performance for us. See all the pictures here:

Compliments of Dick Adams, there are some video clips available for downloading. The quality has been significantly compromised to keep the file sizes manageable. There are two versions of the clips, one for dial access and one for broader band access. The two and a half minutes has been extracted from an excellent 9 minute video and includes brief glimpses of representative activities.
Some of the examples included in the clips are:
