New Haven Young Artists Solo Competition
From Nick Tingley
I had the pleasure of attending the first annual Yale New Haven Young Artists Solo Competition last Saturday, May 3, 2008. Held in Sprague Hall and featuring wind and brass players in grades 4 through 8 of the New Haven Public Schools System - it was just great.
Twenty players from ten schools entered the competition. All were well prepared; all were good; and some were stunning.
First prize went to Kevin Lopez, a sixth grader from John C. Daniels School of International Communications playing Brahms' Hungarian Dance on clarinet. Extremely well played and beautifully attuned with his piano accompanist.
Andrew Suzuki, in seventh grade at Worthington Hooker School, took second with his baritone horn, playing J. S. Bach's Cello Suite arranged for Euphonium and Trombone - Sweet.
Three other awards were presented, for which I do not have the details. |
