Our mini reunion has been set for April 17-20, 2013 in New Haven. Secretary Don Bitsberger (recovering well after surgery) and members of the Executive met in April to frame the plans, which include outstanding lecturers, tours, plus plenty of time to visit among ourselves. Put the dates on your calendar and await further details.
A recent request may stir some remembrances: “The Association of Black Anthropologists will be publishing the second volume of Black Pioneers in Anthropology. I have been asked to write a chapter on Councill Taylor who was a member of your class at Yale. I am wondering if you know any members of the class who might have some memories of Count?” Put on your memory cap and email Professor Jerry Wright at wrightj@savannahstate.edu. Thanks.
Wally Morrison’s son, Michael, and his scientific colleague Paul Mayewski, have written an unusual book of their adventure stories and photographs doing climate research in crazy places. Get a copy of Journey into Climate available for downloading and discover the cutting edge where anti-scientists fear to tread.
The tolling bell continues with a brief notice, “My father, Donald Crawford (Class of 1950), passed away in February.”
Milton P. DeVane died on April 7 at his home in New Haven, CT. He grew up as a “faculty child,” and his father, William C., served for many years as the dean of Yale’s faculty. Following graduation, Milt spent a year studying at Cambridge, UK; then three more as an officer in the US Navy (Korean conflict); then the Yale Law School. His law career was with a prominent New Haven firm, which permitted him to exercise his passion for civil justice and social fairness. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, three children and five grandchildren.
Paul (Rusty) Heymann died from Alzheimer’s on April 14, 2012 in Bozeman, MT. His spirited humor enriched many friendships among Y’50, and his cautionary comments in Fifty Seasons are worth re-reading. After graduation he returned to Ohio and worked for Ohio Plate Glass Co., retiring in 1989 as President and CEO. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy, three children and four grandchildren.
Robert O. Derrick, Jr. died on April 8, 2012 in Peterborough, NH. During WWII he was a flight instructor flying B-24’s, 25’s and 26’s. After receiving his BE in Y’50, he built diesel locomotives for General Motors. In 1960 he joined the CIA working on technical intelligence collection systems. High altitude reconnaissance aircraft became his specialty. Retirement brought him to Gloucester, MA, and then to NH. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois, two children and three grandchildren.
Francis T. Daly died unexpectedly on April 11, 2012. He practiced law at the Legal Clinic of Norwalk, CT, accompanies by a wide range of hobbies including fencing, building clocks, dancing, woodworking and traveling. He is survived by eight children, two stepchildren and four grandchildren.
Douglas Watts Sturges died on April 21, 2012 in Salem, OH. After serving in the Merchant Marines and the US Navy during WWII, Doug’s business career was with Crucible Steel, Inc. followed by retirement in Naples, FL. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Jane, three children and seven grandchildren.
Charles C. Haffner, III died on April 30, 2012 in Chicago, IL. He was an active participant and leader in many of Chicago’s cultural institutions. He is survived by his wife, Anne, and two sons and two grandchildren.
Our condolences to these family circles broken in death.
