YALE WINS 'THE GAME'

Yale defeated Harvard 24-21 in the final game of the season before 52,484 onlookers in the Yale Bowl, the largest attendance since the Yale-Harvard game in 1989.

Yale came from behind to win with a last-minute pass from quarterback Joe Walland to flanker, Eric Johnson, who made a diving catch in the end zone. Walland earned a place in Yale football history, throwing for three touchdowns after Harvard led 14-3 in the third quarter. Remarkably, Walland's performance came after he had spent the night in the Yale infirmary with a sore throat and fever and a sprained thumb incurred in the Princeton game the week before.

For the season, Yale won nine out of ten games and shared the Ivy League title with Brown.

THE 50th REUNION

Reunion events started with the Class Golf Outing at the Yale Golf Course on Thursday, May 28, 1998 and tennis at the Yale Courts. That evening there was a New England Shore Dinner at the Oswego Inn at Branford.

There were a number of guided tours and lectures on Friday morning. At noon the portrait of former President,  George Bush was unveiled in the University Commons. The portrait, an oil painting by Richard Sherr, will be displayed there permanently. Trumpeters played "Hail to the Chief" as George and Barbara Bush entered the hall.

The unveiling of the portrait was followed by a class lunch and the taking of the class photograph. It was a beautiful day in New Haven.

Yale - Reunion 2.jpg (130983 bytes) Friday evening the 50th Reunion Class Dinner took place under a tent at Davenport College Courtyard.

The Class Meeting was held on Saturday morning. After election of Officers and members of the executive committee, the possibility of having a mini-reunion in about two years was discussed.

President Richard Levin of Yale addressed all alumni at Woolsey Hall. That afternoon Dick Ballard led a walking tour of historic Hillhouse Avenue. The Levins invited all to tea at their home. Later there was an informal concert by a group of Whiffenpoofs of the 40's and 50's.

The AYA hosted a wine tasting in the afternoon, and an informal dinner-dance was held at Davenport that evening. Many of the alumni attended a farewell brunch on Sunday before departing.
